greatinspector | Case File 02 [Voice/Action, Early evening]

[Zenigata has spent the better part of the last month stalking around the village, looking surly and generally pretty cranky. Anyone who tries to bother him was pretty much ignored, as the Inspector seemed somewhat absorbed in his own thoughts. Today, however, is a little bit different. He's finally over his...brooding and grumbling and seems to have flopped down outside his apartment building in the early evening. Anyone who happens by can see that he's taken a bit of booze from one of the bars, and is just kind of flopped down, staring off into the sky with a vaguely thoughtful expression. Periodically, he rambles into the journal to nobody in particular, and he seems receptive to anyone who happens to come by, offering booze to adults]

Y'know, its times like this where I wonder why I became a cop in the first place. I mean, yea, I'm good at it and all, but that doesn't make it an easy job. I work hard, every goddamn day to keep jerks and thugs off the street, and I don't get a lick of thanks from anyone. Hell, most people back home laugh at us cops, think we are all good for nothin' lardasses who like eatin' donuts and harassing people for no good reason. But here, theres...no real need for me ta be a cop. Kinda gets me thinkin' about all the stuff I coulda done with myself besides bein' the best damn cop Interpol has. Coulda been a better husband, coulda taken better care of Toshiko, and been a better grandad too. Bah...

And thats another thing. Its damn weird being one place for so long. How do you people do it? Its kinda freakin' me out, not running off after Lupin every week, and actually having...a house instead of a hotel room. I have a feeling I should start decorating or something, and having more food around than ramen and booze.

Tsk. Of course there is. You just have to find it for yourself. No bosses, no one to to hold yourself accountable to other than the people around here. Justice isn't just laws and enforcement of it.

[Zenigata puts down the drink, and stoppers the bottle]

Yea, I guess you're right. Gotta make sure people can find their way home at night, without being bothered too much. And keeping the peace. We really outta start that watch thing, at least go out lookin' for new people in the woods.

Exactly.

People in the woods? Hn. Well looking for new people is fine, but make sure you bring them to the Welcome Center. They're set up for things like that.

Well, yea. But shouldn't there be more...organized ways to look for newbies? I know I was freaked the hell out.

What have you got in mind?

[Zenigata picks up his hat and drops it on his head]

Patrols. Like we used to do on the force, just do sweeps of the area to make sure things get done.

[Technically that's already done, and Smoker knows it but... all right. A more formal thing he wouldn't mind. After all, it'd be good to have someone finding the people coming back from Malnosso captures as well.]

Patrols it is then. I'm not sure a stronger presence will do much, and there aren't a lot of people who can get all the way to the outskirts easily, but at least it could also help find anyone disoriented from a Malnosso experiment. Or hypothetically deterring the idiots around here.

Well, yea. I wish we could also do something to deter those kidnappings in the first place, but I'm not too sure that'd to much good.

Probably not. Everyone's tried and the Malnosso themselves claim to be against it-- [Which he considers complete bullshit.] But maybe it'll deter the people here from killing each other.

Hey, any sort of work that keeps people in line...thats good work.

If that's what you want to do, you should. Just check in with the Welcome Center crew, I don't want to step on their toes when they're already trying.

Go out fishing, have a boxing match, arrest some scalleywag? I dunno, fun is spontaneous

Those do sound like fun. [He did like ice fishing... sort of. But fishing is good. Same with boxing and arresting punks. Always.]

Too bad pirates acting up aren't as common as back home. Well... kind of good, but you know what I mean.

Quiet leads to thinking too much. Do you like mystery novels at all Inspector?

[Zenigata pauses for a moment, thinking about it for a long time]

Yes and no. I do enjoy them sometimes, but if the author is any good at setting a scene, then I tend to figure it out really fast. And that gets a little boring.
